At doomed Peugeot plant, talk of betrayal and war

Reuters -- Auto body painter Kamel Yousfi's extended family emigrated from Algeria to work for Peugeot-Citroen in the 1970s. So news that the factory outside Paris where he has worked for most of his adult life will close came as an unforgiveable betrayal.

His emotional response: to declare "war" on the company.

Yousfi's rage reflected the attitudes of dozens of unionized workers at the sprawling plant in the suburb of Aulnay-sous-Bois as they digested Thursday's announcement that their workplace would be shuttered in 2014.

The furious response to the closure, which loss-making PSA Peugeot says is necessary due to overcapacity, stems partly from a Marxist-inspired union culture that casts relations between workers and management as a zero-sum class struggle.

If the car company cannot make a profit, there is no sense of it being in business. This is the way a normal business and economy works. Things are developed, people see a need and the product comes into use and then other things are no longer needed, can't make a profit and fades away. The same exact thing has happened in the US and many other countries. Build quality stuff at a reasonable price and the company will stay in business. That's life in today's and past economies, deal with it! Do Not rely on the government to help you, help yourself with your own sweat and determination. Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! 12/22/2012!

Radical socialistic unionism coupled with high taxes to support a socialistic society will eventually compel all businesses that wish to remain in business to relocate to a location (city, state or country) where the business can survive. Take a good look at Sweden, France, New York, Michigan and California for current examples.

What a sad simplistic economic philosophy. There is no free lunch. Every business must compete in a world marketplace. If government, labor, or any factor demands too much, the business must eventually go elsewhere or die.

Throw the management out first, say in July 2012, clawing back all of their bonuses and excessive pay, then close the plant, if necessary, once better management is in place (at much lower costs).

France's pastime is protesting and vandalism. Most union members don't get that when a business' revenue is exceeded by expenditures the business goes bust. Look what brought down Chrysler and GM into bankruptcy. It wasn't because Chevy's were poorly made, it was because they were made unprofitably.
